Alocasia Black Velvet, also known as Black Velvet Elephant Ear, is a highly sought-after dwarf indoor plant with velvety, deep green leaves and silvery white veins. Its remarkable visual appeal has made it increasingly popular among indoor gardening enthusiasts.

Alocasia Black Velvet is native to jungles of Borneo, Southeast Asia. During the 1860s, English plant collectors searched various jungles across the globe for exotic orchids and houseplants, including the Black Velvet Alocasia and its relatives

This slow-growing plant remains compact, making it perfect for indoor gardens and houseplant collections. While it occasionally produces white flowers, the striking foliage is the main attraction.

Alocasia 'Black Velvet' is easy to care plant. Please note that this plant is not frost-tolerant and prefers bright, indirect light. Alocasia Black Velvet can make a stunning addition to any indoor plant collection.

How to Care for Alocasia Black Velvet:

Lights: Alocasia Black Velvet prefers indirect, bright light when grown indoors. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, so it's best to keep it away from windows. However, if it's too far away from sunlight, it may become leggy, so finding the right position in your home may require some experimentation.

Water: When watering, use room temperature water and ensure that it's evenly distributed throughout the soil. Alocasia Black Velvet will only require watering when the top 5cm of soil is completely dry.

Humidity: Alocasia 'Black Velvet' prefers warm and humid environments, similar to its native habitat in Southeast Asia.

Toxic to pets and children: Yes

Air purifying: Yes

If you notice curling leaves on your Alocasia 'Black Velvet', it may indicate that it's receiving too much light or not enough water. On the other hand, yellow leaves may indicate either over or under-watering. As the plant matures or enters its winter dormancy period, it may also shed some leaves.

Re-potting Alocasia 'Black Velvet' is not frequently necessary, as it grows slowly and can tolerate being root-bound. You'll only need to re-pot it every 2-3 years, and then only in a slightly larger pot.
