The Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger) is an extraordinary cactus native to the rainforests of Mexico. Its distinctive long, flat stems resemble a fishbone, which inspired its name. Initially growing upright, the stems eventually trail down as they lengthen. As an epiphytic plant, the Fishbone Cactus develops aerial roots, similar to its natural environment where it would attach to a host plant. This ornamental cactus boasts fascinating foliage with beautifully wavy margins that undulate along the stem, hence its alternate names: Fishbone Cactus or Zig Zag Cactus.

When the Fishbone Cactus blooms, it produces stunning flowers. The creamy white blossoms feature long outer petals in shades of lemon yellow to orange-brown and emit a captivating fragrance. Other common names for this cactus include Moon Cactus and Rick-Rack (or Ric-Rac) Cactus. To showcase its unique beauty, the Fishbone Cactus is best displayed as a hanging plant, allowing its trailing stems to be admired.

How to Care Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger):

Light: Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger) prefers bright, indirect light. Place your cactus where it can receive ample light, but avoid direct sunlight. Bright, filtered light will promote optimal growth and prevent any potential damage or sunburn to the plant.

Water: Epiphyllum anguliger, or the Fishbone Cactus, differs from most cacti in its preferred growing conditions. Instead of the desert environment, this plant is accustomed to the moist and humid conditions of the rainforest. As a result, the Fishbone Cactus has higher water requirements than typical cacti. It is important to water your Fishbone Cactus regularly.

To determine when to water, check both the leaves and the soil. The leaves should appear plump and healthy, indicating adequate hydration. Additionally, assess the soil's moisture level by inserting your finger into it. If the top an inch of soil feels dry, it shows time to water the plant. Ensure you provide enough water to thoroughly moisten the soil, but avoid leaving it waterlogged.

Temperature:

The Epiphyllum Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger) thrives in average to warm conditions, with a temperature range of 16-25°C (61-77°F).

Humidity: Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger) has high humidity requirements, making it an excellent choice for environments with naturally elevated moisture levels. It thrives in kitchens and bathrooms, where it can benefit from the steam generated during cooking or showering.

Here are some guidelines for repotting Fishbone Cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger

Timing: The ideal time to repot your Fishbone Cactus is in the growing season - spring or summer. The plant can recover and adjust to its new pot more easily during this period.

Root Bound or Emerging Roots: Look for signs that your Fishbone Cactus has outgrown its current pot. There may be two signs : roots have filled the pot or roots growing from the drainage holes at the bottom, it's a clear indication that repotting is necessary.

Refresh the Soil: Even if your Fishbone Cactus still has room to grow in its current pot, it's beneficial to refresh the soil every two to three years. Over time, the potting soil loses nutrients and may become compacted, hindering proper drainage and nutrient uptake. Replace the old soil with fresh, well-draining potting soil to provide your plant with the necessary nutrients and optimal growing conditions.

When repotting, gently remove the Fishbone Cactus from its current nursery pot, taking care not to damage the delicate roots. Place plant in a new nursery pot that is one size larger, allowing room for future growth. Fill the pot with fresh potting soil, ensuring it is well-draining to prevent waterlogging.

Toxic to pets and children: Yes

Air purifying: Yes
