Strelitzia nicolai - White Bird of Paradise | Large Indoor Tree
The Ultimate Tropical Statement Houseplant.
If you're looking to buy a large indoor plant that turns your living space into a lush, boutique-hotel-inspired sanctuary, the Strelitzia Nicolai - White Bird of Paradise is the gold standard. Often referred to as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, this iconic indoor tree is known for its massive, paddle-shaped evergreen leaves that fan out to create a dramatic, architectural canopy. While the smaller Strelitzia reginae is known for orange blooms, the Nicolai is the interior designer's favourite for adding scale and height. Its glossy, deep-green foliage acts as a magnificent living sculpture, making it a top choice for modern minimalist decor and urban jungle enthusiasts alike.

Why we love it:
Instant Impact: A large-scale plant that fills empty corners and adds vertical interest.
Air Purifying Qualities: Its massive leaf surface area is excellent for oxygen production.
Tropical Aesthetic: Bring the holiday vibes home with the most famous large indoor tree.
How to Care for Your Strelitzia nicolai (Bird of Paradise)
Light: The Strelitzia Nicolai - White Bird of Paradise is a sun-worshipper. For the best growth, provide bright, direct light. A spot right next to a south or west-facing window is ideal. It is one of the few houseplants that can handle direct UK sunlight.
Water: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the growing season. Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. As a top tip for indoor plant care, reduce watering significantly during the winter months.
Humidity: As a tropical native, it thrives in high humidity. Mist the leaves regularly, or use a humidifier to prevent the leaf edges from turning crispy; this is key to keeping your Bird of Paradise looking gallery-ready.
Leaf Tearing: It is completely natural for the large leaves to split as they age. This is an evolutionary trait called "fenestration" that allows wind to pass through the leaves without snapping the stems.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Will my Strelitzia nicolai flower indoors? While these plants produce stunning white and blue "bird-like" flowers in the wild, they rarely bloom in typical indoor conditions. They are primarily prized for their incredible, large-scale foliage.
Is Strelitzia nicolai pet-friendly? No. The Strelitzia Nicolai - White Bird of Paradise is considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It may cause oral irritation or digestive upset. We recommend placing this large plant in a corner where pets are less likely to nibble on the foliage.
How fast does a Bird of Paradise grow? In a bright spot, the Strelitzia nicolai is a fast grower! It can easily reach 2-3 metres in height, making it one of the best tall houseplants for high ceilings.
Style & Ship
The architectural lines of the Strelitzia nicolai pair perfectly with our curated collection of stylish plant pots. Because this plant grows tall and heavy, we recommend one of our large, stable ceramic, metal or concrete-effect pots to provide a solid foundation for its dramatic height.
