How much light and water does a Strelitzia need?
Strelitzia are sun-lovers. They thrive in bright, direct to indirect light. Placing your Bird of Paradise near a south-facing window is ideal. Without enough light, the plant may grow slowly or fail to produce its iconic architectural leaves. Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. In the UK, this is usually once a week in spring and summer, reducing to every 10-14 days in autumn and winter. Always allow excess water to drain away.
Why are the leaves on my Strelitzia plant splitting?
Leaf splitting is a natural evolutionary trait of the Strelitzia. In the wild, these slits allow wind to pass through the leaves without catching and snapping the plant. This "shabby-chic" look is typical of the plant's tropical aesthetic and does not indicate the plant is unhealthy.
Which pot is best for a Bird of Paradise?
