Pet safe houseplants UK cat and dog owners are genuinely searching for are not always easy to find when browsing a general plant collection without clear safety information. Knowing which plants are genuinely safe, and being able to browse a collection where every single variety has already been verified as non-toxic, makes an enormous difference for anyone who shares their home with animals or young children. We chose every plant in this collection because it is beautiful, genuinely rewarding to grow, and confirmed non-toxic to cats, dogs, and children. Rebel Plants is based in London and delivers UK-wide, so your pet safe plant can be with you quickly and in excellent condition, wherever you are in the country.

Which Houseplants Are Safe for Cats and Dogs?

The Calathea family is one of the most celebrated pet safe houseplant groups available, offering extraordinary foliage patterning in greens, purples, silvers, and pinks that makes it genuinely competitive with the most beautiful toxic varieties. Calatheas are non-toxic to cats and dogs, thrive in medium to lower indirect light, and bring a quiet, dramatic beauty to any room they inhabit. The Hoya family is another outstanding pet safe choice: Hoya Kerrii with its iconic heart-shaped leaves, and the Hoya Carnosa Compacta Hindu Rope, with its sculptural coiled foliage, are both non-toxic and among the most characterful houseplants available. The Spider Plant is one of the most reliably pet safe trailing plants in existence, non-toxic, easy to grow, and producing cascading offshoots that look wonderful from shelves and hanging planters. The Kentia Palm and Fatsia Japonica are large, architectural pet-safe statement plants that tolerate lower light well and suit any room that needs an impressive green presence without posing a risk to animals.

The Chinese Money Plant, Pilea peperomioides, is non-toxic and a genuinely popular choice for cat-owning households, its coin-shaped leaves on slender stems creating a distinctive display that suits modern and Scandi-inspired interiors particularly well. Peperomia varieties, with their compact, varied foliage and low maintenance needs, round out a collection of genuinely beautiful plants that prove emphatically that choosing pet safe does not mean choosing boring.

Pet Safe Plants as Gifts for Animal Lovers

A pet safe houseplant is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give to a cat or dog owner who loves plants. A beautifully chosen gift from the Rebel Plants pet-safe collection removes that anxiety entirely, giving the recipient something they can display anywhere in their home without worry. This level of consideration is something plant-loving pet owners notice and genuinely appreciate.

Quick Care Guide for Pet Safe Houseplants

Most pet safe houseplants in this collection prefer bright to medium indirect light and consistent but not excessive watering, allowing the top 2 to 3cm of soil to dry between waterings. Calatheas appreciate higher humidity and will thrive near a humidifier or pebble tray, while Hoyas and Peperomias prefer drier conditions and less frequent watering. Full care details are on each individual product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Orchids Safe for Cats and Dogs?

Phalaenopsis orchids, the most commonly sold orchid variety in the UK, are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. While eating large quantities of plant material can cause digestive upset in animals, Phalaenopsis orchids are not considered significantly toxic and are a reasonable choice for homes with pets. However, orchid care products including fertilisers and pesticides can be harmful, so keep any plant treatments well out of reach of animals regardless of the plant's own toxicity status. Always check the individual product page for the most specific information available.

What Are the Best Pet Safe Plants for a Low Light Room?

The Calathea family is the strongest pet safe option for low light rooms, tolerating medium to indirect light and offering extraordinary foliage variety that makes it a genuinely exciting choice rather than a compromise. The Spider Plant is another excellent pet safe low light performer, growing well in indirect ambient light and producing trailing offshoots that look beautiful from shelves and hanging planters. The Kentia Palm tolerates lower light conditions better than most large architectural plants and is confirmed safe for both cats and dogs. For darker rooms, the Parlour Palm, Chamaedorea elegans, is a compact pet safe choice that thrives in low light and suits both small and larger spaces well.

Are Pet Safe Plants Also Safe for Children?

Most plants in this collection are considered non-toxic to children and pets, but non-toxic does not mean edible. Even non-toxic plants can cause mild digestive upset if eaten in large quantities, and some plants may cause minor skin irritation in sensitive individuals, even if they aren't considered significantly toxic overall. The plants in this collection are chosen to be as safe as possible for family homes, but supervising young children around all houseplants is always good practice, regardless of their toxicity status.

How Can I Tell if a Houseplant is Safe for My Pet?

The most reliable sources of houseplant toxicity information for pets in the UK are the ASPCA Animal Poison Control database, which lists thousands of plants by toxicity to cats and dogs, and the Veterinary Poisons Information Service. Rebel Plants lists toxicity information on every individual product page to make it as easy as possible to check before purchasing.
