PERFECT ADDITIONS:
Big-Lip Orchid - Phalaenopsis ‘King Car Dalmatian’
Make a bold statement with the Phalaenopsis ‘King Car Dalmatian’, an orchid that looks like it stepped off a runway. This isn't your average Moth Orchid; it belongs to the coveted "Big-Lip Orchid" category, featuring an oversized, flared bottom petal that gives the bloom a fuller, more rounded, and symmetrical appearance. True to its name, the ‘King Car Dalmatian’ boasts a striking "Dalmatian" pattern—crisp white petals heavily splashed with deep burgundy-purple spots. It’s eccentric, sophisticated, and incredibly long-lasting. If you want a plant that sparks conversation and adds a touch of avant-garde style to your interior, this is the one.
Why we love it:
The "Big-Lip" Effect: A rare mutation that creates a fuller, more luxurious flower shape.
Graphic Pattern: High-contrast spots that stand out in any plant collection.
Care Instructions
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, which can bleach the spots on the petals. A spot near an east-facing window is perfect.
Water: Water when the roots appear silvery-grey. Submerge the nursery pot in water for 10–15 minutes, then let it drain completely. Never allow water to sit in the "crown" (the centre where the leaves meet), as this can cause rot.
Humidity: Like most tropical orchids, it appreciates a bit of humidity. It will thrive in a kitchen or bathroom, or you can place it on a pebble tray with a little water.
Temperature: Keep in a stable environment between 18-24°C. Avoid sudden temperature drops or placing it directly next to a cold window in winter.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is it Pet Friendly? Yes! The Phalaenopsis ‘King Car Dalmatian’ is non-toxic to cats and dogs. It’s a safe choice for pet owners who don't want to compromise on exotic style.
What makes a "Big-Lip" orchid different? In a standard orchid, the bottom petal (the lip) is small and modified to attract pollinators. In a Big-Lip variety, the lip "mimics" the other petals, growing much larger and flatter, creating a stunning, star-like symmetry.
Will the spots be the same on every flower? The pattern is genetically determined, but the intensity and exact placement of the spots can vary slightly from bloom to bloom, making your plant truly one-of-a-kind.
How do I get it to bloom again? Once the flowers drop, keep the plant in a slightly cooler spot at night (around 15°C) for a few weeks. This temperature "stress" often triggers a new flower spike. Pair your orchid with our Orchid Care Gift Set to keep it healthy, vibrant, and blooming for longer with easy, everyday care.
